Some Bail Bond Companies Are Scraping Arrest Records and Cold-Calling Your Family. Here's Why That's Wrong.

There are companies in this industry using automated software to scrape arrest records, run background checks, and call your mother, your ex-wife, your kids — before you've even made a phone call. I've been in this business long enough to know this isn't who we're supposed to be.

I Need to Talk About Something That's Been Bothering Me

I had a conversation this morning that got under my skin. Not because it was new information — I've known about this for a while. But because the more I think about it, the angrier I get.

There are companies operating in the bail bond industry right now — big ones, well-funded ones — that have built automated software to scrape arrest records. They pull from sheriff websites, local news, court databases, public records. The moment someone gets booked, their system runs a background check. Automatically. Then it starts calling.

Not the person who was arrested. Their family. Their mother. Their brother. Their ex-wife. People who had no idea their loved one was even in custody yet.

How the Scam Works

Here's what makes it especially ugly: the callers often imply that the person in custody gave them the number. They'll say something like, 'Your son is in jail and gave us your number as someone who might be able to help.' That's not true. Nobody gave them anything. A computer found the number.

Think about what that call does to a family. A mother picks up the phone and hears that her child is in jail — from a stranger who called her out of nowhere. A man in the middle of a custody battle gets a call telling him his ex is in custody. Someone's employer gets a call. Someone's elderly grandparent.

These companies are not calling to help. They're calling to close a sale before any other bail agent gets there first.

This Goes Against Everything Bail Is Supposed to Be

I've been doing this for years. And if you go back and look at bail bond websites from the last few decades — almost every single one says the same things. We care. Your privacy matters. This is confidential. You can trust us. We're here for your family.

That's what this industry is supposed to stand for. When someone calls me, they're usually scared, confused, and in one of the worst moments of their life. The trust they place in a bail agent is real. It's not a transaction — it's a relationship built on the understanding that what happens in that conversation stays there.

Automated cold-calling blows all of that up. It treats arrest records as a lead list. It treats families as targets. And it cuts out every small, ethical operator who built their business on referrals and reputation.

The Real Victims

I want to be clear about who gets hurt here.

First, the families. Imagine getting a call from a stranger telling you your kid is in jail. You don't know if it's real. You don't know who this person is. You're panicking. And now you're being pressured to make a financial decision — often thousands of dollars — in a state of shock, with someone you've never met, who found you through a database.

Second, the defendants. Their arrest — which may result in charges being dropped, or a case that never goes anywhere — is now being broadcast to people in their lives who may not have needed to know. Custody disputes. Employment. Family relationships. All potentially damaged by a cold call.

Third, the honest agents in this industry who built their businesses the right way. We can't compete with a machine that calls a family before the defendant has even finished being booked. We rely on people calling us because someone they trust recommended us. That's how it's supposed to work.

What I Do Instead

I don't cold-call. I don't scrape. I don't buy lead lists. I don't have a computer dialing your grandmother at 2am.

When you call me, I answer. I ask real questions. I give you real answers — including the ones you might not want to hear. If bailing someone out right now is the right move, I'll make it happen fast. If it isn't, I'll tell you that too, even when it costs me the sale.

Every client I've ever had came to me because someone they trusted said my name. That's the only marketing I believe in. And it's the only kind of business I want to run.

If you've received one of these cold calls from a company you've never heard of, you don't have to use them. You have options. Call me. Ask your questions. I'll give you straight answers with no pressure and no games.

You Deserve a Bail Agent Who Earns Your Trust.

No cold calls. No pressure. No games. Just straight answers from someone who's been doing this for years and built his reputation one family at a time.
